Lifeboat launched after man threatens self-harm
Northumbria Police requested assistance from Humber Coastguard at 17.40 after they were made aware of the man who was threatening to harm himself while standing close to the edge of North Shields fish quay. He was carrying a large knife.
The lifeboat launched just a few minutes later and travelled just 100 yards to stand by off the quay as a precaution in case the man entered the river. Also tasked were paramedics and the shore-based Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade.
Police negotiators spoke to the man and after 30 minutes persuaded him to be taken into their custody for his own protection. The lifeboat and other emergency services were then stood down.
