Two Rescued From Tide By Tynemouth RNLI Lifeboat
The alarm was raised at 18:50 by members of the public calling 999 after they saw a woman and a young girl shouting for help. They had been trapped on the small area of beach between Sharpness Point and the former outdoor swimming pool.
Humber Coastguard immediately requested the launch of Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat and tasked the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade to assist on shore.
Arriving at the scene the Cullercoats lifeboat crew realised their Atlantic 85 class lifeboat could not get close enough to rescue the pair due to the shallow water, so they requested that Tynemouth RNLI’s D class inshore lifeboat be launched. In the meantime two Cullercoats crew members went ashore to ensure the casualties were not injured and provide reassurance.
Once Tynemouth’s inshore lifeboat arrived the casualties were quickly rescued and taken to safety at Cullercoats harbour, no worse for their ordeal.
The lifeboat then returned to station where it was refuelled and made ready for service again.
