Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat launched after person reported falling from bridge
Humber Coastguard received a request for assistance at 9.43am from Northumbria Police who had received a report of a person seen falling from the Redheugh Bridge that spans the Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead.
Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was tasked to the scene, along with an RAF rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer and the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade who joined Police and Fire & Rescue teams.
The lifeboat with three volunteer crew travelled the 9 miles upriver to the bridge arriving shortly after 10am.
An extensive search of the river and its banks was carried out but after 90 minutes Humber Coastguard were satisfied nothing more could be done and all search units were stood down, and the lifeboat returned to station.
