The Severn class lifeboat was introduced in 1995 and shares the same hull shape as the older Trent class. It carries a small Inflatable Y Class boat that can be launched and recovered by a lightweight crane to enable rescues close to shore. Its propellers are protected so it can take ground without damage. Spirit of Northumberland was named and dedicated by the Duke of Kent in May, 2000. The lifeboat was funded as a result of of the Tynemouth Appeal 1998-1999 together with generous bequests and donations made by local lifeboat supporters.
