The Royal National LIfeboat Institution is a registered charity that saves lives at sea: It provides, on call, a round the clock search and rescue service to 100 nautical miles out from the coast of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and a lifeguard service on 62 beaches in the south and south west of England. Tynemouth lifeboat station was established by the RNLI in 1862.

The RNLI, which provides nine out of 10 sea rescue launches, continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.

There are 233 lifeboat stations strategically placed around the coast operating an active fleet of 332 lifeboats, ranging from 5m to 17m in length, and a relief fleet of 112 additional boats. The current fleet also includes four active and one relief hovercraft.

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews (and since 2001) its lifeguards, have saved over 145,000 lives.

Tynemouth RNLI station launched its two lifeboats on 68 occasions, saving 88 people, during 2007, which proved to be one of the busiest years for the station.

To go on saving lives at sea means training and equipping our vital volunteer crews, which costs money, and as a charity, the RNLI relies on your support.
