UK Coastguard’s Humber Operations Centre requested the launch of the lifeboats at 21.33 on Thursday night after receiving a request for assistance from Northumbria Police who were dealing with the incident. South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were also tasked on shore, along with the Fire & Rescue Service who deployed cliff rescue equipment, and Paramedics.

As the lifeboats launched, the crews were updated with the information that one of the men had come to safety but the other remained in a dangerous position and the lifeboats were requested to stand off with caution so as not to inflame the situation.

The lifeboats arrived on scene five minutes after launching and maintained their position north of the incident.

At 22:13 it was confirmed that the casualty was safe and in police custody and the lifeboats were stood down, returning to station at 22:20.
