Humber Coastguard paged Tynemouth lifeboat at 17:18 on Wednesday March 1st after a request for assistance from Northumbria Police. Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were also tasked to join police officers and paramedics at the scene.
Launching soon after, the lifeboats arrived on scene at 17:33 and stood by to provide safety cover in case the man fell and entered the water, as police officers negotiated with him to come to safety.
A swell of 1-1.5m would have made the job of the inshore lifeboat helm very difficult should an evacuation had become necessary.
Just before 19:00 the man was persuaded to come back from the cliff edge and taken into police custody. All the search and rescue teams were stood down and the lifeboats returned to station, arriving at 19:06.
Lifeboats: D-693 Mark Noble and 17-20 Spirit of Northumberland.
