Man Rescued After Cliff Fall
Northumbria Police alerted UK Coastguard at around 16:50 that a man had been reported to fall from a cliff at the south side of Frenchman’s Bay. A police helicopter was tasked to the scene and UK Coastguard’s Humber Operations Centre requested the launch of Tynemouth all weather and inshore lifeboats at 17:01. The South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB), A Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Humberside, North East Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service were also all tasked.
The lifeboats arrived on scene just five minutes after launching and while the all weather lifeboat stood by off the beach, one of the inshore lifeboat crew went ashore to assist with the rescue of the man who had suffered minor injuries. Members of the SSVLB had gone down the cliff using their specialist rope rescue equipment and had taken a HART paramedic down to assess and give initial treatment to the casualty.
The Rescue Helicopter arrived on scene as an option to extract the casualty by winch, and another option would have been to evacuate him from the beach by lifeboat but it was decided the best method was to take him on a stretcher up the cliff using the SSVLB’s rope team. This was done and the casualty was put in the care of Paramedics and once on his way to hospital the rescue teams were stood down at 18:15.
Lifeboats: D-693 Mark Noble and 17-20 Spirit of Northumberland
