Anglers On Pier Spark Alert

ANGLERS fishing on Tynemouth Pier in heavy seas on Saturday evening sparked a rescue operation involving Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat.

The alarm was raised just before 18:15 when UK Coastguard received a report that there was possibly someone in the sea close to the end of the pier and that lights were visible.

The UK Coastguard Operations Centre at Humber requested the launch of the all weather lifeboat and tasked the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) and Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team to the incident.

As the lifeboat arrived on scene, just under a mile from the lifeboat station, the crew found that there was no-one in the water but a party of anglers were fishing from the pier while waves were coming over the top.

As the lifeboat crew stood by with the lifeboat’s searchlights providing illumination, Members of the TVLB went onto the pier and walked the anglers off to safety.

When all the anglers were accounted for and on dry land the lifeboat, TVLB and Blyth CRT were all stood down, with the lifeboat returning to station at 19:28.

Lifeboat: 17-20 Spirit of Northumberland.
