Man Threatening Self Harm

The scene during the last incident in December 2015.

A MAN threatening self harm led to Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat volunteers assisting with the incident late on Saturday night.

Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the inshore lifeboat at 23:31 after receiving a request from Northumbria Police who were dealing with a man armed with a knife threatening to harm himself on North Shields Fish Quay. The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were also tasked to assist on shore, and Paramedics also attended.

The lifeboat launched five minutes after the crew were paged and stood by a safe distance from the quay, just a few yards upriver from the lifeboat station. After a standoff lasting thirty minutes the man surrendered to police negotiators and was taken into custody.  The lifeboat then returned to station. This is unfortunately the third similar incident involving this male that our volunteers have been tasked to.
