Stranded Fishing Vessel Assisted By Tynemouth RNLI Lifeboat
The skipper of the 17m, 56-tonne Green Pastures called Humber Coastguard for assistance shortly before 9am after extensive efforts to free the nets failed when the vessel’s batteries became flat.
Arrangements were made for a relative of her skipper to bring a set of charged batteries to the lifeboat station to be taken out on the all weather lifeboat, which launched at 09:10.
When the lifeboat reached the trawler the batteries were passed across, fitted and the engine was restarted, providing power to operate the winches so the fishermen could continue to try to free the nets.
After over an hour most of the net including the trawl doors had been recovered back on to the trawler, but its prop was still fouled so the decision was taken to tow her back to her home port of Blyth. The tow took 80 minutes and once Green Pastures was safely secured alongside the quay the lifeboat returned to the Tyne, arriving at the lifeboat station after refuelling at 13:55, nearly five hours after launching.
