Dive Boat Brought To Safety

TWO people onboard a broken-down dive boat were brought to safety by Tynemouth RNLI volunteers on Wednesday afternoon.

The skipper of a 5m Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) called Humber Coastguard at 17:18 for assistance when his engine failed leaving the two divers stranded half a mile south of the Tyne Piers.

Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched at 17:23 and quickly located the boat outside the piers, exactly where the divers said they were.  A tow rope was attached to the RIB and it was taken to safety at Cullercoats harbour where it had launched from earlier in the day.  The experienced divers needed no more assistance and thanked the lifeboat volunteers for their help. The lifeboat then returned to station arriving at 18:20.
