Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat at 12:45 after a 999 call was made to them reporting the broken down craft and a person in the water in the lower Tyne harbour, near to the Groyne. The South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade was also tasked to assist on shore.
As the lifeboat sped to the scene which was just a few hundred yards from the lifeboat station, another jet ski came to the assistance of the broken down craft and started towing it to safety to the South Shields slipway. A person who had been swimming ashore from the craft was also picked up.
Once it was clear that there was no-one in difficulty any more, the lifeboat escorted the jet skis to the slipway and once they and their riders were all safe, returned to station at 13:05.
