The alarm was raised at 1.10pm by members of the public who called 999 after seeing the man fall. As Humber Coastguard tasked Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat, three men bravely waded into the sea and prevented the man from drowning.
The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were also tasked by the Coastguard.
The man, who appeared to be highly intoxicated, was then put on board the lifeboat and brought to the lifeboat station. He had suffered a head wound and other injuries.
On arrival at the station the man was assessed by paramedics, then, in a difficult operation, transferred to a stretcher and brought ashore where he was placed in an ambulance and taken to hospital.
