THE discovery of a man’s body in the River Tyne at Newcastle at lunchtime on Thursday led to the launch of Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat to assist in the recovery operation.
Humber Coastguard were asked for assistance by Northumbria Police at 12:08pm after the discovery of the body in the river near to the Millennium Bridge.
Tyne & Wear Fire Rescue Service’s boat was unavailable at the time so the inshore lifeboat was requested to assist Police and Fire Service personnel already on scene.
The lifeboat and two volunteer crew members launched shortly after and sped the 8 miles upriver.
The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was also tasked to assist on shore.
When the lifeboat arrived the crew found that the casualty had already been recovered onto the NE1 Marina pontoon as the Fire & Rescue boat had been tasked after all. After confirming there was no further need for the lifeboat it returned to station, arriving at 13:00.
