At 16:50 Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the inshore lifeboat after a request for assistance from Northumbria Police who had received a report that there may have been people calling for help near the old outdoor swimming pool at Tynemouth Long Sands.
As the lifeboat was speeding to the scene it was found that the informant who had called police had actually meant the old outdoor pool at Table rocks, Whitley Bay and the search teams were redirected to that area.
As the lifeboat crew searched between the northern end of Cullercoats Bay and the Half Moon rocks at Whitley Bay the police and TVLB made a search of the shore and found that there had been a fishing competition taking place and that there was no-one in any danger. The incident was treated as a false alarm with good intent and all search teams stood down, with the lifeboat returning to station at 17:25.
