Body found after search for missing elderly man

Tynemouth’s Spanish Battery

A SEARCH for a missing man on Wednesday night by both Tynemouth RNLI lifeboats, the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Northumbria Police sadly resulted in a body being found.

Both the inshore and all weather lifeboats were requested to launch at 20:57 by Humber Coastguard who were assisting in the search for a 91 year-old man missing from his Tynemouth home.

Members of the TVLB and police officers had been searching the area around Collingwood monument for nearly an hour but when the search was extended to include the rocks and pier areas the lifeboats were needed to search from the water.

The search progressed until 21:25 when a member of the TVLB found the casualty, sadly deceased, on rocks just to the east of the Spanish Battery, inside the mouth of the River Tyne.

The lifeboat crews stood by as TVLB members assisted Police and Paramedics as they prepared the casualty for extraction. The man was then carried off the rocks by the TVLB. Our sympathies go out to the man’s family.

Both lifeboats then returned to station.
