Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat speeds to the assistance of a windsurfer at Seaburn
Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat speeds to the assistance of the windsurfer.

A WINDSURFER in difficulty led to Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat being tasked to go to his assistance on Sunday afternoon.

The lifeboat was already involved in an incident with a capsized sailing dinghy between the Tyne piers when Humber Coastguard received a 999 call at 12:45 about a windsurfer who had become separated from his board in the sea off Seaburn.

Sunderland RNLI’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat was also launched, and the shore-based Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to the scene.

The weather conditions were poor with winds gusting over 60mph, and rough seas.

As the lifeboats sped to the scene it was reported that another person had gone into the sea in an apparent attempt to rescue the windsurfer, but as the lifeboats got closer the Coastguard team reported that both people were out of the sea and safe. Neither required medical assistance.

Once officers at Humber Coastguard were satisfied there was no-one in any danger any more both lifeboats were stood down.  The all weather lifeboat then returned to the Tyne to check on the progress of the inshore lifeboat that was towing the capsized sailing dinghy to shore.

Lifeboat: 17-20 Spirit of Northumberland.
