Lifeboat Launched To Person In Water
Humber Coastguard made an immediate launch request for the all weather lifeboat at 16:50 after they were alerted to the person in distress in the sea off Hendon groyne.
Once launched, the lifeboat crew were tasked to go to provide support, including searchlights, for both Sunderland’s Atlantic 85 class lifeboat and D class inshore lifeboat which had also been launched.
Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912 was also tasked along with Sunderland Coastguard Rescue team who located the casualty from shore and guided the Sunderland lifeboats to that position.
The crew of Sunderland RNLI’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat recovered the casualty and while providing immediate casualty care, rushed him to Sunderland lifeboat station where Paramedics were waiting.
Once the casualty was in the care of the Paramedics all the search and rescue teams were stood down, and the all weather lifeboat returned to station, arriving at 17:50.
It transpired that the casualty was an angler who had either slipped of been washed by waves from a maintenance ramp. Fellow anglers heard his cried for help and immediately called 999, which led to a very quick response and possibly saved the man’s life.
This rescue comes as the RNLI continues the Respect The Water campaign which aims to half the number of coastal drownings in the UK by 2024. As part of the wider campaign we are also prompting the wearing of lifejackets by shore anglers.
Over the past five years, 24 anglers have died across the UK and Ireland while fishing from rocks or the shoreline, and the number of ‘near misses’ has been even higher, with the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews rescuing 240 shore anglers and saving 28 lives between 2010 and 2014.
