Three Boats Escorted To Safety

THREE boats, each with on person on board, were escorted to safety by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat on Thursday afternoon after two the vessels broke down in the river Tyne, near to the Tyne Tunnel.

Humber Coastguard paged the inshore lifeboat at 17:23 after the skipper of one of the small vessels called for assistance after he came across another small boat which had broken down while towing another.

He managed to get the two boats under tow but asked for help as the two boats were going eight miles upriver to the Ouseburn marina and he would need help putting the boats on a pontoon.

The inshore lifeboat reached the vessels at 17:36 and escorted them upriver, with the volunteer crew assisting in getting the boats moored on arrival at the Ouseburn. Once that was completed the lifeboat returned to station, arriving at 19:20.

This was the 50th service launch carried out by the station during 2015.
