Yacht towed to safety after engine failure

A YACHT with two sailors on board was towed to safety by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat on Thursday afternoon after its engine failed leaving it unable to manoeuvre safely in harbour.

The skipper of the Dutch yacht Archimedes called Humber Coastguard for assistance after the vessel suffered a suspected engine cylinder head gasket failure just north of the Tyne piers, en route to Eyemouth. There was a strong westerly wind.

The yacht’s skipper was unwilling to carry on without the backup of his engine and Humber Coastguard requested Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat to launch and assist the yacht into the Tyne harbour.

The lifeboat launched at 15:15 and met the Archimedes north of the piers.  A tow rope was attached and the yacht taken to safety at Royal Quays Marina where her owners had arranged for repairs to be made.
