Tynemouth and Cullercoats RNLI lifeboats bring angling boat Faith to safety in the river TyneSIX anglers had a lucky escape on Thursday afternoon when their boat started taking on water half a mile out to sea from South Shields.

Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat and Cullercoats RNLI inshore lifeboat were requested to launch by Humber Coastguard at 3.30pm after the skipper of the 8m angling boat Faith made a distress call.

Launching just a couple of minutes after the volunteer crews were paged, The lifeboats raced to the stricken boat, with Tynemouth lifeboat reaching her first, quickly taking off the anglers and putting three crew members on board with a salvage pump.

The leak didn’t get any worse and the Faith was shepherded into the safety of the Tyne harbour before Tynemouth lifeboat took her under tow towards North Shields.

The skipper of the Faith assisted by lifeboat crew members managed to seal the leak so it was decided it was safe to return the vessel to her moorings at Friar’s Goose Marina, Gateshead. The anglers were then transferred back on board the her and Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat took over the tow upriver, leaving Tynemouth lifeboat to refuel and return to station.

As Tynemouth lifeboat approached the boathouse the crew noticed a jet ski rider who had fallen off his craft and was attempting to climb back onto it. Read more about this service.
