Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat launched to assist with body recovery

Reports of a body in the water at Newcastle quayside led to the launch of Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat on Sunday morning.

Northumbria Police requested assistance from Humber Coastguard at 10:45 after the tragic find.

Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat launched soon after and sped the 8 miles upriver to the scene. The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were also tasked to assist on shore.

On arrival at the scene the two volunteer lifeboat crew members discovered that the body of a male had been found next to the NE1 marina and that the Fire Service and Police were in attendance.

The lifeboat acted as a shield to prevent onlookers from being able to see the casualty and after waiting for a scenes-of-crime officer to attend the body was recovered by  the Northumbria Police Marine Unit. The lifeboat was then stood down at 12:30, returning to station at 12:50.
