A TRAWLER with two crew was towed to safety by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat this evening after the vessel suffered engine failure leaving it stranded 23 miles out to sea from Tynemouth.

The skipper of the 31 tonne 14m Johanna radioed Humber Coastguard for assistance at 17:45 after being unable to restart his engine. Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat launched 6 minutes later and steamed at best speed, reaching the trawler in just under an hour.

The volunteer crew quickly attached a tow rope to the Johanna and settled in for the long and slow tow back to the Tyne, arriving at North Shields fish quay at 22.15.  Once the trawler was safely tied up the lifeboat refuelled and returned to station.
