Trawler towed to safety by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat
Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat escorts the trawler into Blyth harbour after towing her to safety.

A TRAWLER was towed to safety this morning by Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat after the vessel suffered engine failure, stranding it and its crew.

The skipper of the 56 tonne 17m trawler Green Pastures made a call for assistance to  Humber Coastguard for at 07:55, reporting that his engine had failed, and that he had three crew on board.  The vessel was 12 miles east of the Tyne.

Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat with six volunteer crew members launched very soon after and steamed at best speed to the casualty vessel, reaching her at 08.30.

The lifeboat crew assessed the situation and quickly attached a tow rope, and started the 90 minute tow to Blyth harbour.

As the vessels approached the harbour entrance Deputy Coxswain Dave Robinson prepared to take the Green Pastures alongside for the final section into the harbour, but the trawler skipper radioed to say he had managed to restart his engine and could get underway. The tow rope was taken back onto the lifeboat which then escorted the vessel into Blyth South Harbour. Once the casualty was safely moored the lifeboat returned to the river Tyne.
