TWO people were rescued from St Mary’s Island on Monday afternoon by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat after they were cut off by the tide.

At 3.25pm Humber Coastguard received a 999 call from a couple who were trapped on the island.

Tynemouth RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was requested to launch and sped to the island, arriving just ten minutes later.

The three volunteer lifeboat crew members quickly located the pair, aged in their 20s, and lifted them onto the lifeboat, taking them them to shore and landing them on the beach where they were met by Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team who gave them safety advice. The lifeboat then returned to station.

Lifeboat: D-693 Mark Noble
