Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat rescues… ship’s lifeboat

DSV Mermaid Endurer

A ship’s lifeboat was rescued today by Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat after the vessel developed engine failure during a training exercise.

The RNLI lifeboat crew had already launched and were preparing to carry out an exercise with a new Coastguard rescue helicopter when they were requested at 10:30am by Humber Coastguard to assist the lifeboat of the Dive Support Vessel Mermaid Endurer which was moored at Bede Quay, Jarrow.

Arriving on scene the lifeboat crew discovered the lifeboat drifting several hundred yards from the ship. They quickly attached a tow and took it and its three occupants back to the ship where it was  hoisted from the water.

As a thank-you for their efforts the ship’s crew rewarded the four lifeboat volunteers with polo shirts embroidered with the DSV Mermaid Enquirer logo.

The lifeboat crew then travelled out of the water to carry out the helicopter exercise.
