Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat Spirit of Northumberland passing St Mary's Island, Whitley BayTynemouth RNLI lifeboat station has been announced as the busiest on the north east coast during 2014 after RNLI lifeboats in the north of England launched more than 1,000 times during the year.

Our lifeboats launched a total of 65 times, rescuing 64 people, making the station the busiest on the coast between Berwick upon Tweed and Skegness.

RNLI lifeguards patrolling nearby beaches at Cullercoats and Tynemouth were also amongst the busiest in the North, with the teams going to the aid of 352 people in 245 incidents.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is urging people to Respect The Water after statistics released today show the charity’s volunteer crews at the 33 RNLI lifeboat stations in the north rescued 930 people during 1,025 rescue launches, while RNLI lifeguards dealt with 1,905 incidents and helped 2,360 people.

Some 34.5% of RNLI lifeboat rescues were to recreational craft (354); 22.5% were to people ashore (233); 17% to people in the water (174) and 16% to fishing vessels (164).

Machinery failure was the most common cause of rescue (240 launches – 23% of the total), with people in danger of drowning the second most common cause (132 launches – 13%). A further 75 people (7%) needed rescuing after getting cut off by the tide.

Tynemouth RNLI inshorelifeboat MArk Noble on exercise of TynemouthTony Clare, RNLI Coastal Incident Reduction Manager, said: ‘The RNLI’s rescue statistics emphasise the need for everyone to respect the water and follow simple safety advice before heading to the coast. Some very basic precautions can keep people safe on and by the sea which, by its very nature, is unpredictable and can catch out even experienced water users.

‘Checking a boat’s engine and fuel before setting out to sea could prevent the cause of our most common rescue, machinery failure. Making sure you know the tide times before going for a walk along the coast can be the difference between an enjoyable day out and getting cut off by the tide. Avoid areas where you could get swept off your feet in stormy weather and, if you are visiting the beach in the summer and want to swim, be sure to visit a lifeguarded beach.’

The busiest lifeboat crews in the north of England in 2014 were:

Blackpool – 94 launches rescuing 16 people
Tynemouth – 65 launches rescuing 64 people
Morecambe – 55 launches rescuing 34 people
Whitby – 55 launches rescuing 76 people
Sunderland – 54 launches rescuing 67 people

The busiest lifeguard teams in the north of England in 2014 were:

Bridlington South – 137 incidents aiding 143 people
Cullercoats – 128 incidents aiding 203 people
Tynemouth, Longsands – 117 incidents aiding 149 people
Sefton, Ainsdale – 99 incidents aiding 119 people
Sefton, Crosby – 93 incidents aiding 178 people

Overall, the lifeboat rescue statistics show a similar picture to 2013, when the north’s RNLI lifeboats launched 1,028 times and rescued 1,027 people. RNLI lifeguards dealt with 2,252 incidents in 2013 and helped 2,803 people.

Across the UK and Ireland in 2014, RNLI lifeboats launched 8,462 times
rescuing 8,727 people. RNLI lifeguards attended 17,050 incidents and helped 19,252 people.

George Rawlinson, RNLI Operations Director, said: ‘RNLI volunteer lifeboat and shore crew and lifeguards have shown the commitment and courage we have come to rely on, but we must of course also thank our supporters and dedicated fundraisers who work tirelessly to ensure our charity, which is dependent on donations from the public, can continue to keep launching our lifeboats and patrolling some of the coast’s busiest beaches.’

The RNLI launched its Respect The Water campaign last year to raise awareness of drowning and water safety with the aim of reducing the number of people who lose their lives at the coast. For more information go to www.rnli.org.uk/safety
