Humber Coastguard had received a report at 7:55am from Police that there was an upturned boat in the river at the old South Shields pilot jetty, almost opposite the lifeboat station on the other side of the Tyne.
In the first service the station has carried out this year, the inshore lifeboat was requested to launch to investigate the vessel, and ensure there was no-one in any danger under or around it.
Arriving at the scene the lifeboat crew discovered a very small boat but no sign of any casualties so the boat was recovered on board and taken to shore at the nearby slipway. Once it was placed out of reach of the water the lifeboat retuned to station, arriving at 8.18am.
