Search for suspected unmanned vessel by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat

A REPORT of a vessel drifting with no occupants in the lower Tyne harbour prompted a search by Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat this morning.

Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the lifeboat at 10.25am after a member of the public reported to Police that they had seen a small vessel with no-one on board in the vicinity of North Shields Fish Quay.

The lifeboat with three volunteer crewmen started searching from the lifeboat station to the north pier and back along towards Tynemouth Haven, past the Black Midden rocks and back to the fish quay, finding nothing.  Police officers who attended the location of the informant were unable to locate them for further details but it was thought that the description of the vessel matched that of two that were securely moored close to the lifeboat station.

Satisfied there was no vessel of persons in danger Humber Coastguard stood the lifeboat down.
