Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat joins search for bridge fall man
Northumbria Police requested assistance from Humber Coastguard at 14:41, who immediately requested the launch of the lifeboat, also tasking an RAF rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer to make an aerial search, and the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade to search from shore.
Other emergency services involved were Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue service’s boat, and North East Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Teams.
The lifeboat with three volunteer crew travelled the 8 miles upriver at maximum speed. When they arrived at the Tyne Bridge they were tasked to search downriver as far as Walker.
The teams made an exhaustive search of the river and its banks but after two hours nothing was found. Humber Coastguard was satisfied nothing further could be done and stood the lifeboat, helicopter and TVLB down. The lifeboat returned to station shortly after 5pm.
