Tynemouth and Cullercoats RNLI lifeboats tow fishing boat to safety
TYNEMOUTH and Cullercoats RNLI lifeboats worked together this afternoon to bring a 9 metre fishing boat with three fishermen to safety after the vessel’s engine failed leaving it drifting near St Mary’s Island, Whitley Bay.
The skipper of the coble Boy Mitchell called Humber Coastguard for assistance at around 13.00 and Cullercoats RNLI’s Atlantic 85 class lifeboat launched to go to the boat’s aid.
The Cullercoats crew attached a tow rope and began to tow the vessel to the river Tyne but in the heavy swell behind the north Tyne pier they found that the 3 tonne coble was becoming unmanageable and eventually their tow rope parted.
The Cullercoats lifeboat helmsman called Humber Coastguard to request that Tynemouth RNLI’s all weather lifeboat be launched to assist. It launched at 13:45 and quickly reached the scene and her crew attached a tow rope and a large drogue behind the casualty vessel to stabilise it during the tow.
Tynemouth lifeboat towed the Boy Mitchell into the river and passed the tow back to Cullercoats lifeboat for the final few hundred yards to manoeuvre the boat onto North Shields Fish Quay. Both lifeboats then returned to station.
