Man threatening self harm sparks lifeboat launchA MAN threatening to harm himself prompted the launch of Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat this evening.

Humber coastguard requested the lifeboat at 20:05 after they received a request for assistance from Northumbria Police who had responded to a man sitting on rocks close to the sea at Sharpness Point, Tynemouth, between Kind Edwards Bay and Longsands. The man was threatening to cause harm to not only himself, but any rescuers who attempted to help him.

As police officers negotiated with the man the lifeboat stood by a safe distance from the shore, but close enough to rescue the man if he entered the water, while a team from the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade stood by on the shore.

After 40 minutes the man agreed to come off the rocks and was taken into custody and then on to hospital.

The lifeboat then returned to station.

Lifeboat: D-693 Mark Noble
