Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat stands by after suspected armed fugitive cornered on pierTynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was placed on standby after police chased a man suspected of being armed with a gun on to South Shields pier.

Humber Coastguard requested the lifeboat be placed on standby to launch after a request for assistance from Northumbria Police after officers had chased a man onto the pier.

Volunteer crewmembers assembled at the station and three crew put the lifeboat in the water but owing to the nature of the incident remained at the lifeboat station waiting for instruction from Humber Coastguard.

Armed police officers went onto the pier as the Northumbria Police helicopter monitored the situation.

After around ten tense minutes the suspect was taken into custody and the lifeboat stood down
