SUSPECTED persons in the water at Marsden Grotto led to both Tynemouth RNLI lifeboats being launched this evening.
Tynemouth all weather lifeboat was launched at 19:22 after members of the public had alerted Humber Coastguard to what they thought were people in difficulty in the sea off Marsden beach.
The inshore lifeboat was completing another service after being launched less than an hour previously.
After arriving on scene the all weather lifeboat crew started searching the area with nothing found. The inshore lifeboat joined the search shortly afterwards.
Soon after, members of Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team spoke to people on the shore and it was discovered that the suspected casualties were in fact free swimmers who had returned to shore and were getting changed on the beach. Once this was confirmed the lifeboats were stood down and returned to station.
