A MISSING person sparked a full-scale alert in the early hours of Monday (June 2nd) after he was reported to be in a distressed state and threatening self harm.

Northumbria Police requested assistance when the person, thought to be an 18 year-old male was reported to be on the shore close to Trwo Point, South Shields.

Humber Coastguard requested the launch of both Tynemouth all weather and inshore lifeboats with a total of 9 volunteer crew members at 25 minutes past midnight to join the search, along with Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team who searched on shore. The Police helicopter was also tasked.

As the lifeboats arrived on scene it was reported that the missing person had been found and taken into police custody. Once Humber Coastguard were satisfied the casualty was safe all search units were stood down and the lifeboats returned to station.
