Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat launched to reports of jumper

Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat, TVLB and a Police RIB at North Shields ferry landing

Humber Coastguard responded to a request for assistance from Northumbria Police and requested the launch of the lifeboat at 16:33, also tasking the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) to the scene. A boat from Northumbria Police Marine Division was also launched to the incident.

When the inshore lifeboat crew reached the ferry landing they spoke to members of the public and members of the TVLB and found no sign of anyone in any distress or danger, or matching any description of the suspected casualty.

As the search progressed it was discovered that police officers had taken a person into custody in similar circumstances at the nearby Royal Quays Marina and, satisfied that there was no-one else in any danger, Humber Coastguard stood the search down with the lifeboat returning to station at 16:55.
