Possible Car Cliff Fall prompts Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat search

REPORTS that a car may have gone over cliffs at South Shields prompted a search by Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat today.

Humber Coastguard received a report from Northumbria Police that they feared the car may have gone over the edge at Marsden after a member of the public reported strange activity during the morning. The Police helicopter was unavailable.

The inshore lifeboat was launched at 11:15 and the three volunteer crew members conducted a thorough search of the coastline down to Manhaven Bay while members of Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team searched the cliff tops.

After several passes were made nothing was found by either team and the search was called off by Humber Coastguard who were satisfied there was no car.

The lifeboat then returned to station.
