Trawler towed to safety by Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat

A TRAWLER that had become stranded after nets were wrapped round its propeller was towed to safety by Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat this evening.

Humber Coastguard requested the lifeboat launch at 17.05 when they received an emergency call from the skipper of the fishing vessel New Dawn after another fishing vessel, Madalia, had steamed across his nets, causing both sets of nets to become entangled and wrapped round the Madalia‘s propeller, leaving her without power 7 miles off the Tyne.

As the lifeboat travelled to the scene other vessels offered assistance including fishing vessel New Horizon and Royal Navy minesweeper HMS Grimsby.

Once on scene the lifeboat crew found that the New Dawn had released her nets leaving the Madalia still disabled but with both sets of nets attached.

One lifeboat crewman was put aboard the vessel to assist with getting the nets out of the water but it was not possible to free the propeller and the Madalia was towed to North Shields fish quay, arriving at 18:45.  Once the trawler was tied up the lifeboat refuelled and returned to station.
