A DRIFTING boat and its skipper were towed to safety this morning after the vessel suffered mechanical problems, leaving it drifting in the middle of the river Tyne near to South Shields ferry landing.

The lone occupant of the 7.3m angling boat made a 999 call to Humber Coastguard at 10:23 requesting assistance. They immediately requested the launch of Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat.

Tyne pilot launch Collingwood was close and stood by the vessel to ensure it didn’t drift further into danger.

The lifeboat arrived on scene a few minutes after launching and towed the casualty vessel, which had been en-route to Hartlepool, to safety at its moorings at CJ Marine, Howdon.

The lifeboat then returned to station arriving at 11:24
