A MAN was rescued this afternoon when his boat's engine failed leaving him drifting in the river Tyne.

Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat at 16:49 after the man called for help, reporting his position as close to Whitehill Point, approximately two miles upriver from the lifeboat station.

The 18 foot casualty vessel was quickly located by the lifeboat crew, and taken under tow to its berth at Willington Quay.

The lifeboat then returned to station, arriving at 17:45.

Tynemouth RNLI lifeboats have been launched on service 16 times during 2013. The inshore lifeboat launched eleven times, and the all weather lifeboat five times.
