A BRIDGE jumper prompted a search by Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat this evening.

The alarm was raised after a person had been reported to jump into the river Tyne from the Gateshead Milennium bridge and Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the inshore lifeboat at 19:05 after a request for assistance from Northumbria Police. The Tyne & Wear Fire Service rescue boat was also launched.

The lifeboat crew made their way upriver and made a thorough search of the area but no trace of a casualty was found by them or the fire boat crew. Humber Coastguard was satisfied that every effort had been made and called the search off.

The lifeboat then returned to station.
