THREE men were rescued by a volunteer crew from Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat station this afternoon when their boat's engine failed leaving them stranded in the river Tyne near the former Swan Hunter shipyard.

Humber Coastguard requested the launch of the inshore lifeboat at 17:21 after the Port of Tyne Vessel Traffic Service passed a report about the men onboard the vessel waving in distress at people on shore.

The lifeboat crew travelled the 5 miles upriver and quickly located the casualty vessel, a 17 foot angling boat. The boat's engine had overheated, causing it to fail. A tow was quickly attached and the vessel taken to safety at Hebburn marina. The lifeboat then returned to station.
