A CALL made to Northumbria Police claiming someone was going to jump from Tynemouth pier led to Tynemouth RNLI all weather lifeboat being launched late on Saturday night.

Humber Coastguard requested the lifeboat launch at 21:30 after they received a request for assistance from Northumbria Police who had already scrambled their helicopter to the scene. Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were also tasked to assist police officers search the pier.

After both piers and the surrounding area were thoroughly checked no-one was found to be in any difficulty and the search was called off.

Update (01 Jan 2013): A man has been arrested and bailed for making a malicious hoax call in connection with this incident.
