A SUSPECTED person in difficulty in the sea off Tynemouth prompted the launch of both Tynemouth and Cullerecoats RNLI lifeboats today.

The lifeboats – Tynemouth's all weather lifeboat and Cullercoats Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat – launched at 13:29 to investigate a report made to Humber Coastguard by a member of the public who though they had seen someone in trouble in the sea off Longsands beach.

The lifeboat crews quickly located a surfer who was paddling his board behind the surf line and although the sea was moderately rough, he was in no danger.

After ensuring there was no-one else in the water who could have been in difficulty, both lifeboats were stood down and returned to station.

Lifeboat (relief): 17-17 Fraser Flyer
