Three fishermen and their trawler were towed to safety yesterday (November 3rd) after their boat suffered a transmission failure, leaving them stranded 12 miles ouit to sea from Blyth.

The skipper of the 13m, 35tonne Solan made a radio call to Humber Coastguard at 12:50 requesting assistance.

Tynemouth all weather lifeboat was already at sea a mile off Cullercoats preparing for an exercise with the inshore lifeboat, Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat and an RAF rescue helicopter, and was immediately tasked to go to the aid of the stranded vessel.

Arriving 25 minutes after the alarm was raised, a tow rope was passed to Solan and she and her crew were towed to safety at North Shields Fish Quay without further incident, arriving at 15:40.

The lifeboat was then refuelled and returned to station at 16:15.
