Tynemouth lifeboat station was tasked by Humber Coastguard at 18:00 to investigate a report of a partially-sunken boat near to Tynemouth's Black Midden rocks in the lower harbour.

As the station boarding boat was already being used in the river it was used to go to the scene – just a few hundred yards away – and located at badly damaged inflatable boat that had clearly been in the water for some time. To avoid any similar reports the damaged boat was towed back to the lifeboat station and taken out of the water.
