Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was requested to launch at 17:52 hrs by Humber Coastguard after they received a request for assistance from Northumbria Police who were dealing with an incident involving a man standing at the edge of a cliff. at Marsden, South Tyneside. The man was clearly drunk and threatening to jump from a very precarious position.

The lifeboat crew took up a position under the cliff while shore teams from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team stood by as a Police negotiator attempted to talk the man to safety.  Fire and Ambulance crews also attended.

After 90 minutes the man was persuaded to return to safety and he was taken into custody by Police officers.

As the lifeboat returned to the Tyne the crew were tasked to another incident – details here.
