Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was requested to launch by Humber Coastguard after police were made aware of a distressed male threatening to jump from South Shields pier.  

The lifeboat stood by in case the man entered the water while police officers and members of the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade kept observations on him from the pier.  

After an hour the man walked towards police and was taken into custody. The lifeboat then returned to staion at midnight.
