TWO men were rescued from the sea by Tynemouth RNLI's inshore lifeboat after they paddled out to sea in an inflatable kayak.

The alarm was raised at 2.38pm after the two men had been spotted trying to paddle the kayak back to South Shields beach. They had taken the inflatable out loaded with cans of alcohol, but when they tried to return to shore they found that the tide was pushing them back out to sea.

They then attempted to swim back but quickly became exhausted and the lifeboat crew found them clinging to the kayak.

The pair were put aboard the lifeboat and taken back to shore where they were met by Coastguards and paramedics.  The lifeboat then returned to station.
